Using social media for good

We were approached by the organisers of a unique charity auction to utilise our social media expertise to increase exposure of the event, both locally and nationally, with the end goal to help raise as much as possible for The Fishermen’s Mission.

Porthleven’s Great Baulk Auction took place in 2017 and was the brainchild of Julian Waring, the Fundraising Manager for The Fishermen’s Mission in Cornwall. Inspired by the broken pieces of harbour defence, or baulks, which were destroyed by a storm three years earlier, he developed the idea of using the wood for a unique fundraiser, calling upon local and national creatives to produce wonderful works of art from the broken wood.

Offering our services for free, we developed and managed a social media strategy for the event, focusing on maximising exposure and creating a buzz around the live event. With almost 200 works of art up for auction, including a signed portrait of Dame Judi Dench, content focused on the quality of art and the unique items available, as well as the chance to own ‘a piece of history.’ We used regular calls to action to register for the auction, and targeted Facebook advertising to increase traffic to the online auction catalogue.

The end result: helping to raise over £40,000 for The Fishermen’s Mission.
