Paid Social Briefing: What affected your ads in October and what’s coming in November 2026?
Katherine’s thoughts
October felt boring. Paid social felt slightly stagnant as consumers waited for the budget, which, ironically, also felt pretty boring. Despite Chancellor John Healey leaving the headline income tax, NI and VAT rates unchanged, consumers are more aware than ever of fiscal drag and the rising cost of living. This made for a slow month and a lower-than-expected October payday for most, while family activities received a nice boost thanks to Halloween and Half Term coinciding.
However, we are now entering the fun part of the year.
Welcome to November. AKA, welcome to Black Friday and the pre-Christmas peak.
Although Black Friday isn’t until the end of the month (Friday 27th), Black Friday sales are earlier than ever; some even went live for the October payday.
Prepare for the start of November to be slow, as customers wait for your brand to go on sale. Remember, FOBO (fear of a better offer) is real, and consumers wait until they believe they will get the best price.
What does this mean for advertisers?
- Consider launching Black Friday early. Not keen? Hold your nerve and trust that a strong Black Friday weekend will recoup any losses or delayed income.
- Launching early? Tell your audience these offers are live all month to balance income and sales.
- Not going on sale? Communicate that and focus on what you’re really selling.
Remember, most Christmas sales happen in November (I know, this always shocks me) and during the final push of 2026, it’s your chance to turn every product or service into a gift.
Despite the big push for Christmas, November does have a few “watch-out moments”, including the Bank of England interest rate and inflation figures; however, these are unlikely to stop Christmas shopping, although it might reduce consumers’ disposable income.
The key takeaway is that Christmas shoppers are budget-aware but still spending.
The month in review: October 2026
Economy & Cost of Living
- Inflation jumped to 3.5% in September. CPI rose from 3.1% in August (published 21 October), driven mainly by motor fuels, with core inflation at 2.8%.
So what for paid social: Expect more price sensitivity, so lead with value, reassurance and clear reasons to buy now rather than later. - Consumer confidence fell sharply. GfK dropped 11 points to -24 in October, the biggest monthly fall since April 2020, as energy prices and the Middle East conflict weighed on mood.
So what for paid social: Cautious shoppers browse more and convert less, so test lower-commitment offers and shorter paths to purchase. Expect people to delay spending until they are sure a better offer isn’t coming their way. - The Autumn Budget landed on 28 October. Chancellor John Healey kept headline income tax, NI and VAT rates unchanged, extended the 5p fuel duty cut to June 2027 and announced a £100 energy payment for council tax bands A–D in England from January 2027.
So what for paid social: It was a boring budget which didn’t give us the bounce we were hoping for. October’s pay day spending was the same as a normal low-budget month; however, we are hoping November will recover.
Weather & Seasonality
- Clocks went back, Halloween and half-term arrived. The clocks changed on 25 October and many schools broke up for half-term the same week.
So what for paid social: Halloween gave family days out and activities a nice boost, while the dry weather helped outdoor attractions. Now the days are shorter, the messaging needs to change to reflect the opportunity within the shorter days.
Cultural & Social Moments
- Halloween fell on a Saturday. Seasonal spend and family events peaked over the weekend of 31 October.
So what for paid social: If you haven’t already updated or turned off your Halloween creatives, make sure to do this now.
Things to watch: November 2026
Economy & Cost of Living
- Bank of England decides on 5 November. Bank Rate is 3.75% and analysts widely expect a 25 basis point rise after the September inflation figures.
So what for paid social: A rate rise can dent big-ticket and finance-led purchases, so keep a close eye on cost per result for higher-value products. - October inflation lands on 18 November. Another strong print would add pressure just ahead of Black Friday.
So what for paid social: Be ready to shift emphasis towards value messaging if confidence stays weak.
Cultural & Social Moments
- Bonfire Night and Remembrance fall early. Bonfire Night is Thursday 5 November, with Remembrance Sunday on 8 November and Armistice Day on Wednesday 11 November.
So what for paid social: Keep tone respectful around Remembrance and pause promotional creative where it would feel out of place.
Seasonality & Planning
- Black Friday on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November mark the key sales window.
So what for paid social: Competition for attention usually pushes CPMs up from mid-November, so lock in budgets and creative early. Remember that sales messaging always dominates over this weekend, so if you aren’t on sales, pause your adverts and save your budget. - Christmas shoppers are budget-aware but still spending. IPA research suggests gifting leads festive spend, fewer people plan major cutbacks than before, and nostalgic, emotional seasonal ads still resonate.
So what for paid social: Gift-led, warm and nostalgic creative paired with a clear offer is a safe bet for Q4 prospecting. Remember what you are really selling and focus on the real gift you are giving, including a memory or a feeling.
